Archives For 30-Day Music Challenge

Pro_Tools_10_Joshua_J_Lutz_guitaristI went over by 39 seconds today, but, that’s ok. I’ll cut myself some slack there.

My aim today was to write in 6/8 (thanks, Uncle Joe)!

All was done on my Taylor 414CE acoustic with no plug-ins or effects except for my PreSonus preamp and one track of percussion on which I used the “West Africa” plug-in for Kontact 5.

Finally!

A song done from start to finish in 59 minutes. Whew! I was beginning to worry myself after yesterday’s long time of almost 2 hours. Making things simple with just acoustic guitar is what made the difference.

This has been so uncomfortable putting unfinished songs before my friends and family, but, it’s’ the uncomfortable that spurs growth, right?

If you like the music, the challenge idea, or even if you only find all this mildly amusing, leave a comment and let me know what you think.

EEERRRRGGGHHHH!!!!

I’m frustrated. I couldn’t put it together in time. When the timer beeped at 60 minutes, I wasn’t even close to being done! It took me almost 2 hours to do what you hear below. I had too many distractions, Elijah, technical problems, etc. but, I can’t blame them. I just keep trying to make the songs bigger and better. I’m trying to accomplish too much in too little time and I’m starting go backwards. The goal is to do what I can in an hour or less.

Tomorrow, I’m going to simplify and make sure I finish in less than an hour. Some of the best songs are simple, right? If I eliminate hunting for all these silly sounds, that should buy me enough time, I think. Ok, tomorrow, it’s just going to be the acoustic guitar and a mic.

Day 3. 61 Minutes, 9 tracks.

I went over by one minute. EEERRGH! I should feel good, though, because it’s my fastest time yet with the most tracks. I have yet to break my goal of 60 minutes, but, it will happen soon if I’ll just simplify more. Once I get started on something, it’s hard to stop creating! I think forcing myself to compose, find sounds, record, edit, etc. in a small amount of time is doing me some good. ;0)

Thanks for all the encouragement!

Alright. Today’s song took me 73 minutes from start to finish. Once again, I broke the second rule. I went 13 minutes over my max time goal of 60 minutes. I think I underestimated how difficult it is to find sounds/patches, compose song structure and melody, play/record parts, edit, and bounce a rough mix to MP3 in an hour or less. We’ll see if I can do it tomorrow.

I went in the jazz direction today and got out my Gibson ES-165 Herb Ellis hollow-body guitar. Please let me know in the comments what you think of the challenge, songs, etc. Any of you musicians want to take the challenge with me?
