Archives For What I’m Listening To

Years ago, I was in the studio and was asked to do some Spanky stuff on the guitar. I didn’t know what they meant, so, after scolding me for not being up on Spanky Alford, they played an example of his playing for me off of D’Angelo’s record Voodoo. Once I heard what Spanky played, he immediately became one of my favorite guitar players.

This is me trying to get the feel right for the song “Chicken Grease.” It seems like a simple enough part, but, I still don’t have it exactly like Spanky played it. The difficult part is getting the laid back feel without it sounding rehearsed. It’s the little nuances, that separated his feel from others. Spanky was amazing!

Producer, Daniel Weatherspoon turned me on to this song. No guitar in it, that I can hear, but it doesn’t matter. That synth is killin’!

Danny Gokey’s new album, Hope in Front of Me, released today and is #1 on the iTunes Christian/Gospel charts and #12 overall.

When I first heard this album, I was struck by not just the great music, but message of hope.

We all go through hard times. This album reminds us not to give up, but to turn the page in the book of our lives and enjoy the life we’ve been given.

Hope in Front of Me is available on iTunes. As well as Walmart, Best Buy, and Target.

This week, I’m enjoying Avicii’s album True (Spotify link – iTunes link)

It has a lot of catchy melodies and makes you want to move, but, what I like about it is it’s different.

Hey Brother is perhaps my favorite (YouTube link).

My good friend, Jeremy Nixon, turned me on to the album Forest Fruit by Knobsticker. It’s like 70’s Funk and 80’s Pop with Jazz mixed in. Lots of thick synth sounds in here! Here’s the album link on Spotify and a small sample below. Enjoy!
